Varsity Basketball Lances Win against Longmeadow

LONGMEADOW, Mass. – February 14, 2024 – Varsity Basketball faced off against Longmeadow High School’s JV squad on Wednesday, securing a 74-72 win in a tight contest.

The Eagles started off the first quarter with an aggressive defense that generated turnovers and fast breaks against the Lancers. After struggling to find their rhythm, Longmeadow started knocking down three-pointers from all around the arc and led Eaglebrook 20-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles regained their momentum in the second quarter, reeling off 8 unanswered points to take the lead. The teams then traded baskets back and forth, and Eaglebrook led 35-34 at the half.

In the third quarter, Eaglebrook faltered while Longmeadow continued to shoot well, going up by double digits. But back-to-back baskets by the Eagles cut the Lancers’ lead to 10, and the third quarter ended with Longmeadow up 58-48.

Despite the deficit, the Eagles felt good going into the final frame. They locked in on defense, got back to their first-quarter game plan, and generated multiple turnovers that led to easy baskets. Just two minutes into the quarter, Eaglebrook took its first lead since the half and poured on the pressure with a 22-2 run that ended with a 3-point dagger from the corner.

The Lancers crept back into the game in its final minutes, hitting several deep threes to trim the Eagles’ lead to two. But two free throws with 15 seconds left created a 4-point cushion. Longmeadow finished the scoring with two free throws of its own, but an intentionally missed shot was corralled by the Eagles to seal the win.
