Eaglebrook Varsity Basketball at the Belmont Hill Invitational
The Eaglebrook Varsity team made the annual trip to Belmont Massachusetts for a tournament involving The Belmont Hill School, St. John's Prep, and St. Sebastian's School. The Eagles' first game was against the home team and started as a close game. Throughout the first half, the two teams traded the lead, until the Sextants opened up an 8-point lead with about two minutes left. Despite a poor shooting half, Eaglebrook created a few scoring opportunities in the closing minute and trailed 21-17 at the half. To increase their energy, Eaglebrook turned up the intensity on the defensive end of the floor, creating a number of turnovers, and scoring 9 quick points before Belmont Hill called a timeout. Energized by the quick start, the Eagles maintained their intensity throughout the second half and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the remainder of the game, eventually winning 57-33.
St. John's Prep, an athletic powerhouse from Danvers, Mass, was the opponent in the finals. The Eagles continued their torrid pace from the first game and established an 8-point lead (10-2) in the opening Two minutes of action. St. John's regrouped during a timeout and eased into the flow of their game during the rest of the first half. For the most part, the teams played evenly throughout the rest of the half, which ended with Eaglebrook up 14 points. During the second half, the Eaglebrook defense continued to create turnovers leading to easy baskets. At the same time, the offense settled in and found their own rhythm, eventually opening up a 30-point lead. St. John's continued to play hard and dominated the game's final two and a half minutes, cutting the Eaglebrook lead down to 15 points.
In the end, it was a great day for Eaglebrook, who are excited about our next matchup, on Tuesday, against Rectory at 4:30 pm.
