Eaglebrook's 99th Winter Carnival

Eaglebrook’s 99th Winter Carnival weekend was held on February 6. While the camaraderie among students was present, it was undoubtedly different without the presence of parents, alumni, and friends, who were not able to partake in the festivities on Memorial Field this year.

In a normal year, parents attend classes with their children and attend the Winter Carnival Concert, and take in a play put on by the Drama Department on Friday. Although there were no parents in classes, no play, and no concert, parents were able to meet with each of their child’s teachers and were given access to each of their child’s teachers’ pages on 'myEBS' where they could watch introductory videos for each of their child’s classes.

Saturday was a beautiful and warm winter day with plenty of snow cover that allowed us to host one of the oldest Winter Carnivals in the country. There were no spectators gathered on the field, but the students were excited to be able to complete with their dorms in the events. The first event was the cardboard sled race featuring Head of School Andrew Chase’s sled, Eddie the Eagle, up against the winner of the cardboard sled design contest. The Eddie the Eagle sled came close to reclaiming victory after last year’s defeat but the cardboard sled, titled “King Tut” built by Will H. ’21 was victorious. Watch the race here.

After the cardboard sled races, dorms participated in the Klondike sled races, a fire building challenge, and various participation events including Jack Jumping, Ice Breakers, Hill Climb, and the Freestyle Jump. The final event new to Winter Carnival was an all-school dorm relay race. This year, Mayer House took home the Winter Carnival Cup. A few intersquad athletic games in the Sports Center and in Alfond Arena followed Winter Carnival on Saturday afternoon. Following Winter Carnival Weekend, Andrew Chase, Head of School, held a State of Eaglebrook presentation via Zoom for parents on Wednesday, February 10. Mr. Chase along with the chairs of the Parents’ Committee, Julie and Jon ’84 Murchinson, parents of Henry ’22, updated families on Eaglebrook since the start of the new year, showed highlights of Winter Carnival, and shared plans for the spring trimester and end of year events

Parents also heard from Jon Grenzke '91, President of Board of Trustees; Colin and Nicola Dowling, parents of Nick ’21, Chairs of the Annual Fund. Families watched a presentation from students and faculty on the work the School has done on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. In addition, parents’ watched an entertaining Winter Carnival Weekend highlight video.

Save the date for next year’s Winter Carnival when we look forward to welcoming parents, alumni, and friends for Eaglebrook’s 100th Winter Carnival Weekend on February 5, 2022.
