Eaglebrook is a close community of middle school students, teachers, and their families. The Eaglebrook Varsity Hockey team hosted a talented team from Hillside to campus for a Junior Boarding School clash. The Eagles were excited to return to game action after a few days of practice coming off the annual Vermont trip. Unfortunately for the home team, Hillside was just as excited to get on to the ice and was able to jam home a rebound in the opening minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead.
Despite the early setback, the Eagles began to find their stride over the remaining fourteen minutes of the period. Building momentum with each shift the Eagles remained down 1-0 after the first period but saw life from their last shift. The second period was a hard fought fifteen minutes with both teams trading great opportunities for goals. The Eagles were able to control the puck with great patience and effort in the offensive zone but were stifled by a hot Hillside goaltender.
Entering the 3rd period the score remained 1-0 visitors. Hillside was able to pick up another quick goal coming out of the locker room to take a 2-0 lead again within the first minute of the period. Despite this shock to the system, the Eagles battled hard. A power play goal from Pierce Patterson was set up by tremendous patience and passing got the Eagles on the board 2-1. Stellar efforts on the back check by forwards, patience by defenseman, and some key saves by the keeper helped the Eagles build momentum all the way until the final minute of the game.
With just under a minute left and the goaltender pulled, Seamus Cummings was able to find the back of the net off of great work by Nils Forselius to keep the play alive to knot the game at 2-2. Unfortunately it was short-lived and a heart breaking finish as Hillside was able to win the ensuing draw, race down the ice, and place a beautiful wrist shot into the top right corner with 15 seconds left to take the advantage and the win.
The coaches and players look to build on this effort in an attempt to prepare to face Albany Academy for Winter Carnival on Saturday.
