Eaglebrook Celebrates its 96th Candlelighting Ceremony

“As one light lights another nor grows less, so nobleness enkindles nobleness.”
These words, spoken by the Head of School, Andrew Chase, open Candlelighting—one of Eaglebrook’s oldest and most cherished traditions. The room begins in darkness, illuminated by a single candle. One by one, Sixth Formers step forward to light their candles, their classmates watching with anticipation. Soon, the space glows with hundreds of flames as Sixth Formers return to their peers, sharing the light. Together, students, teachers, staff, and friends gather to sing Adeste Fideles, the room alive with warmth and festivity.

Steeped in tradition, Candlelighting is a hallmark of Eaglebrook’s Winter Trimester, ushering in the start of Winter Break and bringing the community together to share in the joy of the season. The tradition began many years ago at a church in the Berkshires, by Andrew Chase’s great-grandfather. Today, Candlelighting is held in Gibbs Dining Hall, where generations of the Eaglebrook community continue to gather in its warm glow.

The evening began with the Holiday Concert in the Bartlett Assembly Area, where students and faculty listened to merry tunes performed by the String Orchestra, the Band, the Jazz Band, the Chorus, the Ad Libs, and other solo and duet acts. Crowd favorites this year included Hot Chocolate performed by Eaglebrook’s Jazz Band, and the Chorus’ rendition of Last Christmas by Wham!.

After the concert, everyone headed to Gibbs Dining Hall for a traditional turkey dinner. Dressed in their finest attire, students and faculty enjoyed a feast expertly prepared by Ed Howle, Director of Dining Services, and the talented Dining Services team. The room was adorned with garland and featured a spectacular Christmas Tree, serving as the background to this year’s gingerbread display, prepared by the Eaglebrook Bakery. This year felt even more special, as it was the last year students would celebrate in Gibbs, as construction on the new dining hall continues

Following the meal, Third Formers, language carolers, and faculty singers performed an array of festive songs for the entire school.

Head of School Mr. Chase then took the stage to reflect on the tradition of Candlelighting, and begin the procession of Sixth Formers.

The entire night encapsulates the palpable joy of the winter season on our campus. Sharing one’s light with others is a powerful reminder of the mission and values that guide Eaglebrook as a community.
