Brandon Wu '12 qualifies for the US Open one week after becoming an NCAA DI National Champion
Brandon Wu ‘12 has been on a roll. Wu, a senior captain of the No. 6 Stanford Men’s Golf team won the NCAA Division I National Championship over No. 5 Texas at Blessing Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 29.
Wu defeated Texas’s Pierceson Coody 4 & 3. And, Stanford defeated Texas 3-2 to win the national title. It is Stanford’s first national title since 2007 and their ninth in program history. Wu told Golf Week, “It’s crazy. You can’t script a better ending to your career.”
After his national title, a few days later Wu qualified for the US Open after competing in the Columbus, Ohio sectional against a field of mostly PGA Tour players, including Jason Dufner who won the 2013 PGA Championship along with four other PGA tour wins. Also, competing in the field was Luke Donald who has been the number #1 player in the world and has 17 professional tour wins to his name. Fourteen players advanced to Pebble Beach from the Columbus sectional.
Wu, who is a senior at Stanford and will graduate on Sunday, June 16 has been on a hot streak, as it was only five days before that he helped his team win the national title. Wu told the Washington Post, “It’s a surreal feeling. It’s starting to sink in. Graduation is on Sunday of the U.S. Open. The idea is to make the cut, and then maybe wear my cap and gown down the 18th fairway.”
Wu just returned to Arkansas for the Palmer Cup this week and then will play his first U.S. Open, which begins on June 13th at Pebble Beach Golf Club. You can watch the tournament on Fox and FS1.
