Eaglebrook School Holds Baccalaureate Service

On Sunday, May 18, Eaglebrook School community gathered at the First Church of Deerfield for the annual Baccalaureate ceremony honoring the Class of 2025. The event marked a meaningful and reflective moment in the lead-up to Commencement.

Mrs. Wendy Van Epps, Eaglebrook trustee and parent to three alumni and students (P21, P23, P25), delivered a heartfelt Baccalaureate address that drew on personal memories and timeless life lessons. Reflecting on advice she received as a young person—when she “thought she knew it all”—Van Epps shared insights passed down from her father and the experiences that shaped her own journey.

She encouraged students to remain curious, to step outside their comfort zones, and to take bold advantage of opportunities—especially those that involve travel and exposure to the broader world. She emphasized that lifelong learning does not require a formal degree. Rather, it involves immersing oneself in everyday moments with curiosity and intent. “Pursue enrichment,” she said, “not credentials.”

In her second key message, Van Epps reminded students of the strength and impact of community, sharing her father’s philosophy that “a rising tide lifts all ships.” Success, she noted, should not be seen as an individual pursuit but as something that can—and should—elevate others. Giving back, she said, is an essential part of building character and a meaningful life.

She concluded with a story from her father's time as a student at Deerfield Academy, during a philosophy class final exam. When the students opened the test booklet, they found just one word: "WHY?". Initially baffled, her father realized it was not a trick but a profound invitation to reflection. That single word sparked questions about purpose, meaning, and intention. Van Epps urged the graduating class to embrace that spirit of inquiry and to ask themselves the same question—“Why?”—as they forge their paths ahead. And then, she added with a smile, “Why not?” She encouraged them to live boldly, seek fulfillment, and allow that simple yet powerful question to guide their journey.

Head of School Mr. Andrew Chase led the service, which featured readings from several members of the Eaglebrook community, including Mrs. Loren Davine P25, P25, mother of twin boys in the graduating class; Mr. Andrew Bedell P21, P23, P25, a faculty member and parent; rising Sixth Form Student Council President, Ryan K. '26; and the Benediction was read by Mrs. Rachel Blain.

The Baccalaureate is a cherished tradition at Eaglebrook, offering students and families a moment to reflect, celebrate, and look ahead together. Van Epps’ address was a fitting tribute to the spirit of the day—thoughtful, uplifting, and rich with perspective for the journey to come. To view photos, visit our Flickr page.
