Swimming at the Bud Erich Championship

The Eaglebrook Swim team traveled to New Haven and The Hopkins School on Saturday for the biggest meet of the season, The Bud Erich Championship. The team just finished up an undefeated regular schedule with primarily JV prep teams. The most exciting meet being the Winter Carnival meet with the Exeter JV squad, at which Co-Captain Jeffrey Lim broke the school record in the 100-butterfly event.  Saturday, the Brookies swam against 11 Varsity teams, including NMH, Hopkins, Canterbury, Cheshire, Hamden, Wilbraham-Monson, and Williston –Northampton. It was soon to become a special day at the Hopkins pool for the Eaglebrook guppies.

The Eaglebrook team, despite the absence of the premier breaststroker Jack Sun, took 5th and 9th in the opening medley relay, missing 3rd by two tenths of a second. The Eaglebrook team racked up points in the 200 Individual Medley with nice swims by Sean Meng, Felix Tsao, and Andrew Chang. Co-Captain Matt Kenvin scored big in the 200 Free despite being sick just the day before. In the 50 Butterfly, Kevin Chang, Marquis Wong, and Qais Hijazi scored 34 points to put the boys into 3rd place. Declan Cullinane, Henry Wiemeyer ,Ted Oh, and Alex Cherenkov just missed scoring in the very fast 50 and 100 freestyle sprints, while Andrew Chang swam a season best to take 11th place. The 200 free relay team of Co-Captain Lim, Felix Tsao, Andrew Chang, and anchor Tim Barry dropped the fastest time of the year just 2 seconds off the school record for another 5th place finish.  Then soon after that race, Tim Barry won the gold in the 50 backstroke and Kevin Chang took 5th for the Eaglebrookies. Co- Captain Matt Kenvin, Qais Hijazi, and Stephen Gu scored important points for the team in the 500 freestyle which has been a very strong event all year long for the team. In the 100 Butterfly, Jeff Lim took 5th just touched out at the wall by 2 tenths of a second for 2nd place, while Tim Barry took 6th place with a season best time.

With the excellent, big scoring swims by Co-Captain Jeffrey Lim, Kevin Chang ,Sean Meng, Felix Tsao, and Tim Barry in the backstroke and butterfly, the Eaglebrook team was guaranteed  a bronze medal in the team competition despite the finishes in the last two events. Marquis Wong and Ted Oh scored 30 points for the Brookies in the 50 Breaststroke and Alex Cherenkov scored in the 100 Breaststroke. The last event of every meet is the 400 Freestyle Relay. The team of Sixth Formers in their last swim for EBS; Ted Oh, Stephen Gu, Declan Cullinane, and Co-Captain Matt Kenvin finished their Eaglebrook Swim Team careers with a nice 10th place finish.

It was a fantastic finish to a long day in New Haven. What a way to end a great season at the pool! We cannot wait for what’s in store for next year.
