Eaglebrook hosted Cardigan Day on Saturday, October 10, a beloved tradition that brings together Eaglebrook and Cardigan Mountain School athletes for a full day of games. Nine teams matched up with their Cardigan counterparts in Varsity and Junior Varsity football,Thirds, Juniors, Junior Varsity 1, Junior Varsity 2, and Varsity soccer, Mountain Biking, and Cross Country.

The day was full of school spirit, good-natured competition, and excellent sportsmanship. Brookies gathered in the gorgeous fall sunshine to cheer on one another with handmade posters and signs. Coaches shared a few post-game highlights; they were all proud of their teams’ skills, efforts, and attitudes, regardless of the official outcomes.

“The Varsity soccer team earned a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Cardigan Mountain,” reported Coach Nick Leyden. “Eaglebrook controlled the first half, playing some beautiful combinations and creating multiple dangerous chances, eventually taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. Laminee S. ’27 opened the scoring with a trademark left-footed shot before Sangwon L. ’27 tallied his first goal of the season, finishing off an excellent sequence of passing involving Elliott S. ’28, Laminee S., and Chris N. ’28. The second half was more balanced. Laminee S. made it 3-0 before Cardigan scored their only goal. Brody R. ’27 played a great game in net, controlling his box and claiming numerous crosses.”

Coach Jack Faulstick noted that the Varsity football team enjoyed their first Cardigan Day win since 2021, thanks to “strong defensive effort and several explosive plays, moving Eaglebrook’s record to 2-0. Finn M. ’27 kicked things off, scoring a 50-yard touchdown off a screen pass from J.J. B. ’27. Riggins K. ’27 returned an interception for another 50+ yard score and caught a 10-yard touchdown on the following drive to put us up 24-0 at halftime. In the second half, Colin G. ’27 found his way into the endzone on a 42-yard run following crucial blocks from Justice A. ’27, Silvio M. ’27, Enhua L.’27, Sebastian C. ’28, and Lachlan H. ’28. Choppard L. ’27 secured our final score, running through several Cardigan defenders on a short inside run. Overall, it was a complete game where all of our players were focused on the same goal from start to finish, keeping the team first.”

Mountain Biking featured “17 Eaglebrook riders and nearly 40 Cardigan riders,” said Coach Trevor Borek. “It was a beauty day, and the entire squad did a practice run together. The course was three miles, with the B group doing 1 lap and the A group doing 2 for a total of 6 miles. Carl L. ’27 got first in the B category, and Travis K. ’28 and Johnny B. ’27 finished fourth and fifth in the A category.”

Cross Country lost to Cardigan, but runners had achieved quite a bit by the end of the races. Coach Ryan McClure shared that Christian L. ’28, Toby T. ’27, Jason H. ’28, Creek H. ’29, Derek X. ’27, and Kenneth Z. ’29 all set season personal records in the 3K race. “Harrison K. ’27 ran a thrilling race against Zen from Cardigan,” he said. “They were neck and neck the entire race until the final descent. Still, a really close finish with only a seven-second difference!”

The JV football team was excited to play their very first game of the season. They didn’t score any touchdowns, but Coach Jiu was full of praise. “Defense was a huge focus for our team as we were able to hold the game to 8-0 at the end of the first half. Offensively, we had our struggles, but many players got playing time in the running back, receiver, and quarterback roles. Barrett K. ’30 and Owen M. ’29 were standout offensive performers throughout the game. Barrett completed two 30-yard passes to Owen for big gains. Defensively, Nate B. ’28 led our team with 13 solo tackles.”

JV1 soccer tied Cardigan 3-3. This was the second match between the two teams this season. “The Eaglebrook attack was efficient in finishing chances and nearly had a 3-0 lead in the first half,” said Coach Rob
Trimbach-Rios. “Cardigan battled back from being down 1-3 to tie the game with three minutes remaining. While the Eaglebrook boys were disappointed to give up the lead, they worked hard and should be proud of their effort.”

Coach Miles Harlow called the JV2 soccer game “close from the first whistle to the end. Cardigan was ready to come back from the JV2 3-1 win earlier in the year, and they jumped out to a 2-0 start, but the Brookies won with a final score of 3-2. Anderson C. ’27, Boston B. ’30, and Chris D. ’27 scored for Eaglebrook.”

“The Juniors soccer team put together a strong effort against Cardigan,” reported Coach Margaret Sikoski. “Setting up in a new 4-3-3 formation, the team battled hard from the opening whistle. Jordan P. ’28 had a strong game at right back, while Jackson M. ’30 held down the center back position. Emilio T. ’29 and Jero T. ’29 worked hard on opposite wings, and Leo F. ’28 and Sam P. ’30 both came up with some great saves in goal. While the Juniors team lost 5-0, the boys never stopped fighting and gave it everything they had. They should be proud of their effort.”

Thirds soccer “overcame a 2-0 deficit, as Cardigan came out of the gates hot,” said Coach Griffin Budde. “With Eaglebrook down a number of starters and facing physical play from their opponents, the team remained poised. They refused to quit and mounted a huge comeback in the second half to win 4-3. Bear A ’29 got Eaglebrook on the board with a penalty kick at the end of the first half and scored the game-winner with a few minutes left to play. Key defensive plays from goalie Daniel J. ’27 and forward Wes M. ’30 preserved the narrow lead as the game came down to the wire. After shaking hands with Cardigan players, Shelby J. ’28 led a spirited rendition of the Eaglebrook hurrah.” Ba-da-da-da-dum!
