Bob Spencer Retires

Bob Spencer, who has worked for Eaglebrook for 36 years, almost all of them as the Director of the Physical Plant, retired on Wednesday, December 5. Bob began his career at Eaglebrook as a teacher, adviser, and coach who lived in Flagler House. He then moved to his current position and oversaw significant changes to the Eaglebrook campus and its programs.

The Schwab Family Pool was built in 1995, followed by the Alfond Arena and the Lewis Track & Field. Bob was there when the two hillside dormitories, Kravis and Mayer Houses, were built in the early 2000s. He oversaw the gutting and renovation of the three remaining dormitories, Halsted, Flagler, and Taylor Houses in 2007, which coincided with a major renovation of the Learning Center. In 2010, Bob led the project to renovate the Sports Center, adding two new squash courts and solar panels to the building. Most recently, he led the project that put new faculty homes across from the pool and built eight new tennis courts. Big transformations all.
Another thing about Bob: he is a passionate skier, and during his tenure on the Eaglebrook campus, the Easton Ski Area has gone from having J-bars and being dependent entirely on mother nature for its snow to having a chair lift and state-of-the-art snowmaking capabilities. Bob is also passionate about sustainability, and has made sure that all of these improvements to the Eaglebrook campus are as efficient as possible.

Andy Chase '73 told the students at morning assembly on the day of Bob’s retirement, "Most of all he cared about each and every one of you. He made sure that you were safe, and that everything in the Physical Plant worked well." Thank you, Bob for all of your work and dedication. You have truly helped to make Eaglebrook School what it is today. We shared the news of Bob’s retirement on Facebook earlier in the month, and got some nice responses back from past faculty and staff, current faculty and staff, and alumni. Some of the responses are below:

“Congratulations, Bob! Thanks for your hard work and dedication to the school.”

“Bob, thank you for your dedication to the families and the children at Eaglebrook. I’ll never forget the day that my son and his friend were digging in the flowerbed in front of Halsted. When we asked if we could build them a sandbox, they were digging in their new one within two hours. Thank you for all you have done for the school and for our families.”

“You will be missed. Wishing you all the best.”

“Eaglebrook was so fortunate to have you and your family as an instrumental part of the EBS community. I am happy to say I was touched by you, Mrs. Spencer, Jeff, and Amy in all very different and separate relationships. I wish you the best and thank you.”

“What a huge asset you have been to the Eaglebrook community. Impossible shoes to fill…I hope that you enjoy retirement.”

Thank you Bob, for all you have done. You have helped to make Eaglebrook School what it is today.
