A Stroll on the Hillside
As Columbus, first set foot on Hispanola, as Armstrong first set foot on the moon, as the new EBS Varsity soccer team first set foot on Memorial Field; these moments in time, frozen for eternity remain etched on our sub-conscious and memory. The bright sun, glistening and blinding at times, was reflected in the early play. Pass and move, pass and move, became the mantra as newcomer Uno Wait delivered the ball with such aplomb that Eduardo Alvarez, with a deft finish over the advancing Keeper's head, gave the fledgling Eagles their opener. During the early onslaught, like Thanksgiving sales day at Target and Bob's Discount Furniture store, the Eaglebrook midfield pushed forward. Newly appointed captain Connor Edwards delivered a throw of power and accuracy into the path of the advancing Montes De Oca, and with a swift execution, that Queen Mary I would have been proud of, the Eagles were 2-0 to the good.
Hunter Quigg debuting in goal was solid and only conceded a penalty kick. The second half started as much the first, with Juan Carlos Sustaeta and Shoyo Yanagihara pulling the strings, and the boys were off and running again. Davis Chase, a powerhouse this season, drifted in from the left and toe poked the ball to Sustaeta, who would have made Rudolph Nureyev proud the way he danced past three defenders, opened up his body at the right moment, slotting the ball home. Before long, the outstanding Brian Davis won the ball in defense, strode forward and chipped a sublime through ball to the ever-running and willing Uno Wait, who chipped the keeper from a full 25 yards. As the tennis folk of the world would say, that was game, set, and match. There was no man of the match, as this was such a team performance, but the defense lead by Captain Garrity-Rokous were outstanding, and the likes of Yuji Andry, Geronimo Fernandez, and PJ Miccoli can be fully satisfied with their work today.
Therefore as Columbus found, that after those first steps, the challenges the New World lay before him, the EBS team face off on Friday against NMH and again on Saturday, as the team from Rectory comes to town. So as the saying goes, “One small step for man, one giant step for mankind”, I think this Eaglebrook team is up for the challenge. See photos from the game
