Varsity Tennis Battles Groton to 3-3 Tie

GROTON, Mass. – May 3, 2024 – For the first time in many years – possibly ever! – Eaglebrook traveled 90 minutes east to Groton School. Driving with the Varsity Baseball and Varsity Lacrosse teams on a beautiful coach bus, spirits were high for a fun-filled afternoon. After being welcomed by some familiar Brookie alums, the squad headed across the famous Groton “circle” to meet their opponents on an elegant collection of blue courts.

Unlike previous matches, we only played six total matches, and we played them simultaneously. Off the bat, it was clear this was going to be a tight contest and possibly a tie! This added an intriguing element to the competition, as the Zebras were undefeated before playing Eaglebrook.

The Eagles managed to win the first three matches of the day, all in singles. This ensured a tie for the day. Tensions mounted as the final singles and two doubles neared completion. With so much on the line, the Grotonians managed to recover and won the remaining three matches, resulting in a 3-3 tie. Each of the three final matches could have gone either way, but the Crimson and Blue simply didn’t have luck on their side - or the home-court advantage of a large audience cheering them on.

So, a tie. Not ideal, but better than a loss. Had we counted the total games won as a tiebreaker, we would have won 44-31. But alas.

Eaglebrook is back at home versus Suffield on Wednesday, and then we’ll have two more matches (plus our top four going to the Fessenden Tournament) to close the season. Things remain on track for a solid finish!
