Eaglebrook School was founded in 1922 by Howard Gibbs as a private boarding and day school for boys in middle school. Learn about our school in Deerfield, Massachusetts then and now, and read about the Core Skills we think every boy should know.
At Eaglebrook, we recognize that all students learn in different ways, vary in their innate abilities, and come from a variety of educational backgrounds. Classes at Eaglebrook are organized to meet the needs of each boy.
Eaglebrook is a close community of middle school students, teachers, and their families. Activities outside of the academic classroom are important to the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional development of boys in middle school. At Eaglebrook, boys learn more than they ever thought possible, discover inner resources, develop self-confidence, and have fun along the way. Delivering on our mission is only possible through the incredible generosity of alumni, parents, parents of alumni, and friends.”
Alumni play a vital role in the success of the Summer Semester program each year. This summer, many alumni have journeyed back to Eaglebrook to support the program. In addition to the 14 alumni, there are an additional three interns who are alumni of Summer Semester. The four-week Summer Semester program, held in July each year, always attracts younger alumni who want to experience the education field. The opportunity also allows them to connect with old friends and teachers and give back to a school that shaped them into the people they are today. These alums are able to shadow experienced teachers and provided a safe environment for the students.
Laith Hjazi ’16 from Jordan is interning at Summer Semester 2019 and said, “I wanted to come back for Summer Semester because it had a tremendous impact on me. When I was here seven years ago, the faculty and interns had left such a good impression on me, and made my summer at Eaglebrook enjoyable, memorable, and educational. My Summer Semester experience led me to apply to Eaglebrook for the following academic year. Coming to Eaglebrook completely altered my life and educational path. After Eaglebrook, I attended Loomis Chaffee for secondary school, where I felt prepared due to Eaglebrook’s curriculum and rigorous program. If I had not had such a positive experience during Summer Semester, I would have not had such a memorable and diverse educational experience.” Laith went on to discuss the experience of working and teaching young kids who are away from home. “It has been interesting to see how kids from different and same countries interact,'' said Laith. He goes on to say, “I think from a more omniscient view I have noticed how much kids from the same countries and backgrounds rely on each other for friendships, and emotional support through times of homesickness. Moreover, I think one of the most eye-opening things I have learned is how difficult it is to teach a class when you have different abilities and learning speeds.”
Summer Semester is a four-week program for boys and girls aged 10-13. Students have classes, sports, and twice a week take a field trip to various locations around New England. There are 100 students attending Summer Semester this year. Learn more by visiting www.eaglebrook.org/summersemester
