Math Team Wins Big at Recent Competition

Twelve students represented Eaglebrook at Wilbraham and Monson Academy’s annual math competition for middle school students on March 28th. “We were impressed with the students running the event and the friendliness of the entire community,” said Mr. Elias, Eaglebrook’s Math Department Chair. The leader of the Wilbraham and Monson’s Math Club will be attending Northwestern University to study mathematics and economics in the fall. “She was well spoken, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable,” according to Mr. Elias.

There were nearly 50 contestants from eight different schools and twelve total teams from around the Western Massachusetts area. Eaglebrook’s group divided into three teams. For the second year in a row, Eaglebrook earned 1st and 2nd place in the team division as well as the top three individual places. Peter Ma ’20 placed 1st, Conan Chen ’20 placed 2nd, and Dylan Kim ’20 placed 3rd. The team of Peter Ma ’20, Dylan Kim ’20, Frank Zhang ’21, and William Zhang ’21 earned the top spot in the team competition. The team of Ian Choi ’20, James Clavel ’20, Conan Chen ’20, and Calvin Moon ’21 finished in the runner up spot. In addition to their math prowess, they carried themselves with humble confidence as they were gracious in victory.

The Eaglebrook coaches, Joe Elias and Paul Huang were also involved, as the duo participated in a presentation about Desmos technology. They also had the opportunity to collaborate with other coaches about best practices when teaching mathematics.
