After an early rising of 5:45 a.m. and a long drive north to Cardigan, the JV Team dove into the first game a bit ragged from the ride and a short warm up. However, after a few minutes, we soon mounted some strong attacks, but could not finish the shots. Meanwhile, the Plainfield Team had several opportunities that our defense and goaltender were able to turn away. After the quick 20-minute game, we walked away a bit disappointed with a 0-0 tie, when one of our players noted “Hey, guys…that is the first game we did not lose this season!” And that was the inspiration and momentum we needed.
We went into the next game with high energy and solid play, dominating the Cardigan Mountain Reserves. We had a plethora of opportunities and were able to walk away with a strong win.
In our third match, we faced a talented Cardigan Mountain Thirds team, but still managed to create many scoring opportunities, but did not complete the scoring chances. Our defense gave up an early goal as we may have been a bit over confident from the earlier win. We then settled down and played good team defense. However, we were unable to score and suffered our first loss of the day.
Having learned a valuable lesson from that loss, we did not take anything for grated as we met the Indian River School for a fourth 20-minute mini game of the morning. Our opponents faced a team with fire in our eyes and desire in our hearts as we pummeled the goal with shots and some very impressive attacking plays. We finished the morning with a decisive victory and seeded 2nd for the afternoon matches of single elimination.
The afternoon games were 25 minutes in duration. We drew our recent opponent from Indian River, but they were not going to go down easy this time. They battled hard and we countered. We scored an early first goal and fought hard to turn away their attacks. We finished with another lesson in patience and ball control with our first win of the afternoon.
In the second round we met up with our peers, the EBS JVB Team, who were hungry to beat their friends. This was a fun game with plenty of opportunities both ways. In the end, we were able to beat out our classmates and move onto the championship game.
The championship was a re-match against the Cardigan 3rds Team who had beaten us in the morning. We were confident, but a bit slow to start and Cardigan scored a quick early goal. However, we were a new team that did not let such things bring us down. We slowly battled back and in the later minutes of the game dominated the field of play winning all the loose balls and countering with attack after attack, with only 2 minutes to go we tied the game where it stood for the final buzzer and led to a shoot out. During the shoot out we went to our fourth shooter who was able to seal the victory with a 3 to 1 shoot out score and we earned the Championship Trophy!!!
