Failure to secure the ball in the final minute of the game proved costly as Thirds Basketball dropped a heartbreaker to Williston Northampton School in a 51-44 final in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
With the strong passing and timely defense, the Brookies jumped to a quick 7-0 lead against the visitors in the opening minutes and managed to extend that lead to 27-13 at the half. But trouble began in the second half as several poor decisions against a press defense by the Brookies turned the ball over to help reduce their lead to under ten with approximately four minutes remaining in the contest.
Despite a timeout called by head coach Carlos Rios to regroup his troops, the visitors continued their success with a suffocating defense that completely neutralized the Eaglebrook offense. Williston eventually tied the game at 44-all with under a minute to play, on the strength of a fastbreak basket off yet another Eaglebrook turnover.
The home hosts had two more possessions in the closing seconds to score but simply could not find their way to the basket, sending the contest into overtime. That was the extent that the Brookies were in the game as Williston opened the extra session with a pair of three's and never looked back en route to an impressive comeback victory.
