Inter-Dorm Energy Challenge Teaches Valuable Lessons

By Eamon G-R '16
Ed. note: The first inter-dorm energy challenge took place over the last month and ended last week. Energy use in each of the five Eaglebrook dormitories was measured at the end of each week and the results tabulated.

Sustainability in the dorms at Eaglebrook School is emphasized through inter-dorm energy challenges. This year, we had a surprising result, a tie occurred between Flagler and Halsted. Flagler catapulted from third place, while Halsted maintained its advantage. Both dorms showed a reduction of electricity during three of the four weeks of the challenge, culminating in a reduction between 8 and 9 percent. Taylor House plunged from first place to third place over the course of the month, but did show a reduction of electricity during two of the four weeks. Taylor had an overall average electricity increase of 1% over the month. Unfortunately Mayer and Kravis, the dorms up on top of the hill, ended up in the last two places. Each of those two dorms consistently used more electricity each week of the challenge. Mayer ‘s electricity usage increased 6% and Kravis has used about 8% more electricity. Many students put forth a strong effort when it comes to being sustainable. Sustainability at Eaglebrook School continues to thrive among the dorms and their students. The next inter-dorm energy challenge will be held in mid-January, as a part of the national Green Cup Challenge.
