Members of the Class of 2020 Find Their Next Home

Karl J. Koenigsbauer
Warmth, caring, individual attention, structure, and high standards are words used in referring to the Eaglebrook experience. Our goal is to help boys in grades six through nine, develop their talents, prepare them for secondary school, and establish values that allow them to act with thoughtfulness and humanity.

The secondary school placement record at Eaglebrook is strong. Our students are very much in demand by secondary school admission offices and are greeted warmly by admission directors across the country. It is fair to say that an admission officer is thrilled when he or she learns that the candidate that they are going to interview attends Eaglebrook. Our boys have consistently represented themselves as gentlemen when meeting with an admission director. The high degree of success that our alumni achieve in the classroom, along with their leadership, helps pave a clear path to admission office’s doors for our ninth graders.

In the fall, the placement office hosts 50 to 60 admission representatives to meet with interested Sixth Formers. This genuine interest and effort by admission officers to visit Eaglebrook supports just how much in demand our boys are with secondary school admission directors. In the spring of the Fifth Form year, 80 to 90 secondary school representatives attend Eaglebrook’s annual secondary school fair, another sign of the respect our students receive from a nice range of secondary schools.

In early March, a few days prior to admission offices notifying applicants of their decision, faculty start asking me the status of the class, with respect to how they are faring with school decisions.  The Eaglebrook faculty are extremely committed to the placement process for our students and happily advocate for each student early in the process. The care for and commitment given to the Class of 2020 this year by our faculty is reflected in the two thousand plus recommendations submitted on behalf of the 79 members of the class that submitted applications to 55 secondary schools in January 2020.

So, how did the members of the Class of 2020 fare this year? The short answer is: extremely well. The level of competition, for a limited number of openings available on an annual basis, has significantly increased over time. This is especially true for international applicants and for families applying for financial assistance. The Class of 2020, by virtue of their dedication to their studies, commitment to learning, and outstanding leadership on a daily basis, gained admission to 48 highly respected secondary schools on March 10, when decisions were released by admission offices. This is reflected with 73% of the class earning two or more acceptances to schools. 54% percent of the class gained admission to their “first choice” school. Over half of the class, (52%) gained admission to what is defined as a top tier secondary school.

While the Class of 2020 will be heading to an impressive list of secondary schools this September, the true measure of success for a class is determined by how well our students meet the many challenges they will find at the secondary level. The track record for meeting those challenges is impressive for our graduates. 87% of our alumni graduate from the school that they matriculated at after graduation from Eaglebrook. While it is always gratifying to see the list of schools our students will be attending, it is even more gratifying to know that our students will represent themselves, their family, and Eaglebrook by their dedication to doing “their best” after leaving the comfort of the Hill.
