A defensive slugfest came to town when the cougars of Cardigan Mountain School stepped onto the court. After a gritty ten minutes, the Brookies found their form and pulled away, holding off a late rally to win 19-12 to remain undefeated.
A quick 2-pointer by Will Lamb in the first few minutes put Eaglebrook up 2-0 to start the game. There the score stood for a good chunk of the first half. Credit goes to high intensity defense by both teams. Scorers struggled to find position beneath the basket and every shot on the outside was contested.
Strong point guard play by Bill V. and Bim V. kept the ball rotating and the home team eventually found good looks inside and outside. DD C. tested the limits of zone defense, straining for steals. The bigs kept the pressure on underneath the basket, as Coby B., Paul D., Alex C., and Matthew F. banged the boards. Pesky lane clogging by Sean P. and Jeffery L. frustrated Cardigan’s attempts to claw their way back in the game.
With the game well in hand in the final few minutes, Eaglebrook lost composure. Giving away and handful of points on careless turnovers. For a moment it looked like Cardigan found the momentum to make the game competitive again. But, like a ship in stormy seas foundering on a rocky coast, so did the dream come to ruin for Cardigan on that fateful afternoon.
Kaden Schroeder and Basil Horangic sat out with injury/illness.
