2017-2018 School Year Wrap Up

The 2017-2018 school year is over. The last few days of school were filled with activity. Sunday, May 27 was the Baccalaureate service at the Brick Church in Historic Deerfield to honor the Sixth Form.

Anne Faulkner, the mother of Sixth Former Ben King, was the Baccalaureate speaker. Anne is an ardent conservationist and she shared a message with the students that spoke about making sure to leave everything better than it was how you left it. Towards the end of the speech, she told them, “You’ve probably seen the bumper sticker: “Think Globally, Act Locally.” I like to boil this down to Think, and, Act. Think about how everything in this world is connected, and think before you act. But, don’t get stuck thinking. It is not enough to ponder and study a problem. At some point, you need to do something, to get out in front of a problem, before it is too late. My wish is that you lucky graduates will use your great education and positions of power to think about how everything is connected, and then to act to make the world a better place than you found it.” See photos from Baccalaureate here.

Eaglebrook has a full day on Memorial Day, which begins with a ceremony at Deerfield Academy to honor men and women who have given their lives in support of our country. See photos from Memorial Day here.

After the Memorial Day ceremony, the whole school participated in Field Day, a fun afternoon of competition between the six dormitories. Kravis House took top honors for the day, but it was truly enjoyed by all. Photos of Field Day are here. You can also watch a short video of the fun.

Once Field Day is wrapped up, the students move back to the center of campus because it is time to honor the Good Fellow. The Good Fellow is a Sixth Former who is a friend to all, someone who embodies the mission of Eaglebrook School. The class of 2018 elected Tynan Creagh as the 2018 Good Fellow. See photos of the ceremony here.

The final performing arts concert was held on Tuesday, May 29. The String Orchestra, Band, Chorus, Ad Libs, Jazz Band, and solo performers all took their turn on the stage. See photos from the concert here. The All School Picnic was held that afternoon at the Green River Swimming Area in nearby Greenfield. Students swam, played games, and ate burgers and dogs with their teachers and advisors on a beautiful spring afternoon. Photos from the picnic can be found here.

After lunch on Wednesday, the 2018 Talon, Eaglebrook’s yearbook, was unveiled and the dedication was announced. The 2018 Talon was dedicated to TJ and Bobbee Low, honoring their 44-year career on the Eaglebrook campus and wishing them well in their retirement. Watch the video of the dedication here.

Thursday morning brought the Academic Awards, where Nick Leyden, Director of Studies, told the students, “Here at Eaglebrook you are in an environment that is deliberately designed to foster your innate talents as a student.  In fact, that is quite literally part of the mission of the school.  You have the new Evans Center that was designed to help you explore, create, and discover. You have a daily schedule that intentionally creates as many touch points with your teachers as possible. You can’t avoid us even if you try. You have a faculty that is committed to meeting you where you are in your development and doing all that they can to facilitate your growth.”

The spring musical, Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” was presented on Thursday evening. Watch one of the numbers, “Friend Like Me” and take a look at photos from the performance.

And finally, there was the 96th Commencement Exercises. Friday morning was a bit cloudy and grey, but no problem. The ceremony began, and so did the rain. Things kept moving, however. Umbrellas were opened, the band played, and people spoke. Watch Ms. Vicky Ward, mother of Orlando Doull ’18 give the Commencement Address. You can also watch the Sixth Form Commencement Speech by Jonathan Coffy ’18, Headmaster Andrew Chase’s response, and the class prayer given by Andres Fernandez ’18. Photos from Commencement can be found here. Congratulations to the class of 2018. Watch the Sixth Form Goodbye Video.

The 2017-2018 school year was full. Students and teachers experienced the growth that comes with another year full of new challenges and a lot of fun. Watch the 2017-2018 Video Yearbook
