Varsity Tennis Junior Prep Doubles Tournament

In what has fast become a highlight of the spring calendar, the Eagles proudly hosted the Fifth Annual Junior Prep School Doubles Tournament. This year the Eagles welcomed three talented teams: Rumsey Hall, Indian Mountain School, and Hillside School.

The tournament format has each school bring four doubles pairs. All four pairs from one school match up against the four pairs from an opposing school. The fourth pair plays a friendly exhibition match. The top three duos compete and the school that wins two out of three of those matches advances.

The opening round matched up Indian Mountain vs. Hillside, and Rumsey Hall vs. Eaglebrook. Hillside outlasted Indian Mountain to earn a place in the championship. Rumsey Hall brought a talented team and the top pairings battled for what was the most thrilling match of the day. High-speed rallies were highlighted by thundering drives and rapid volley action. The match ultimately went to a tiebreaker, and the hosts prevailed earning a trip to the championship.

Rumsey Hall and Indian Mountain enjoyed many excellent points across their four matches with Rumsey earning 3rd overall on the day. Eaglebrook was playing well after their gritty performances against Rumsey, and their focus carried over against Hillside. Eaglebrook earned the tournament victory with wins in all eight individual matches on the day.

However, the victory truly was an excellent afternoon of tennis for all involved. The weather could not have been more idyllic. Parents and fans from each school joined each other courtside to cheer on the good play. Players shared snacks and drinks together, and the coaches enjoyed friendly sideline banter. Eaglebrook is honored to have shared the day with such a collection of sportsmen and women.

It is fitting that such a day was shared by these players on the afternoon of Mr. O. Stuart Chase’s Celebration. Stuart was a tremendous fan of tennis, an avid player himself for more than 70 years. He instilled a love of the sport in his own family, and in the players and students he coached and cheered. Stuart was a regular supporter of the team and a sage mentor to us coaches. His spirit was alive on the courts today.
