Wrestling at Northfield Mount Hermon

It's a sign that every day the wrestling team has a meet or tournament the weather will be bad, and this Wednesday, 1/17, was no exception. Unlike several times before this season, the wrestling team was able to push through the snow and wintery conditions to arrive at Northfield Mount Hermon. Of the thirteen wrestlers that traveled to NMH, eleven, eighth and ninth graders, had over twenty-one matches in total. NMH varsity team is one of the best teams in New England this year, so the Eagles knew they needed to be prepared to face some tough competition.

The Eagles worked hard the past two days of practice working on several moves that they saw from last Saturday’s meet that would help the team wrestle more complete matches. Of the twenty-one matches, the Eagles won fourteen of them, thirteen by pin. Of the seven matches the team lost, only four were by pin, demonstrating that the team is getting tougher and not giving up in any of their matches. This is an immense improvement since the team's last meet back in December. The Eagles coaches were ecstatic to see this statistic for the team, especially since they were wrestling 2-1-1 minute periods during this particular meet, and middle school wrestlers usually wrestle 1-1-1.

What was the best surprise of the day was that every wrestler had their best match of the year so far. If the Eagles can keep improving each and every match like they did today, they will be a solid team throughout. This Saturday, two Eagles will head to the Fay School to compete in a junior wrestling tournament, grades 5-7. After the weekend, the team will face Keene Middle School, Eagle Hill School, and attend the Avon Jamboree all next week. Time to get back to work. Go Eagles!
