The 95th Winter Carnival

Eaglebrook’s 95th Winter Carnival weekend did not disappoint. Parents arrived on Friday for classes and games, see photos of the class day here. The Eaglebrook Music Department gave a concert Friday afternoon, with the string orchestra, band, chorus, Ad Libs, and solo pianists performing. See photos from the concert here, and check out the performances at www.eaglebrook.org/PerformingArts. There was a performance of the 2017 Winter Carnival play “The Merchant of Venice” that evening. Watch a scene here and see photos from the show here.

The first event of the Winter Carnival itself is the cardboard sled race between Headmaster Andy Chase ’73 in his Eddie the Eagle sled, and the winner of the cardboard sled contest. Many students built cardboard sleds this year, and all were judged for creativity and design. See photos of all of this year’s cardboard sleds here.

The winner of this year’s cardboard sled contest was a group of students who built a Star Wars-inspired ship, and they got to race the Headmaster in the first event. Watch that race here (note: it is the first year that Eddie has not taken the race in a long while!). After the first cardboard sled race, other heats were run, followed by the three-legged race, the Klondike sled race, jack jumping, dual slalom races, and a tiny ski/snowboard jump. Watch a short video of Winter Carnival 2017 here, and see the photos from the day here.

Headmaster Andy Chase spoke during the weekend about the students at Eaglebrook. He said, “It isn’t enough that they are learning the fundamentals of our core curriculum and discovering new interests in electives and new skills in sports. We want even more for them, we want them to be problem solvers and serious thinkers, we want them to use the knowledge that they gain here as the foundation for wide ranging interests in their future lives.” Weekends like Winter Carnival bring us all together and remind us of our goals as a community.
