Varsity Baseball v. Cushing Academy

Eaglebrook Varsity baseball stole the lead late in the game in a 6-4 victory over Cushing Academy on Wednesday. After a quiet start offensively and a cluster of errors and mental mistakes on defense, the team found themselves in a 4-1 hole late in the game. The team got a burst of energy in the top of the fourth with a crafty pickoff play drawn up by Coach Karis. With the score tied 1-1 and two outs, the bases were loaded and Cushing's leadoff hitter was at the plate. James Clavel faked a pickoff to first base, causing the runner to break for a second, where he ran into his Cushing teammate who was still on second base unsure of what to do. The out ended the inning and killed a potential rally that may have put the game out of reach for Eaglebrook. The Cushing batter stranded at the plate would go on to triple to lead off the following inning. On offense, the bats finally came alive in the bottom of the sixth. Wade Volo reached on an infield single and stole second, and Landon Whayne laid down a beautiful bunt down the third baseline (his second such bunt-for-a-hit in the game), reaching first cleanly and moving Wade over to third. Kiernan Keller then reached on an error, and Ryan McHugh hit a deep fly ball over the left fielder's head, scoring Wade. Carson Cleage kept the rally going with a line drive to left field, plating Landon and Kiernan, and Huck Jamison sacrificed to score Ryan, giving Eaglebrook a 6-4 lead. Kiernan Keller then retired the side in succession to seal the come from behind victory. On the hill, James Clavel started the game, going four innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out four and walking one, and Kiernan pitched the final three frames, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out four and walking one. Despite the slow start, we were proud of the team for finishing well and rising to the challenge in our first moment of adversity this season, and we now look forward to another good game away at Deerfield Academy this Saturday.
