Thirds Basketball v. Redemption Christian Academy
Nate Roachford's tie-breaking layup with the time expiring clinched the 31-29 win over Redemption Christian Academy on Tuesday afternoon for Thirds Basketball as the Brookies erased a six-point deficit with under two minutes to play to rack up victory number two of the season.
It was a big win for the Eagles in more than one way as they snapped a three-game losing skid by dominating the final minutes of the contest with a ferocious defense to eke out the "W."
MIscues in the first half set the visitors back by as many as eight as they fell behind the home hosts that featured a pair of outstanding perimeter shooters. But that did not rattle the Eagles as they regained their poise and upped the defensive effort a notch to keep the score within reach.
The stellar defense ultimately set the tone of the game for the offense as the Eagles pushed the ball up the court off turnovers created by the defense for several transition baskets to tie the game at 29-all with eight seconds to play in regulation.
With Redemption Christian inbounding the ball for what seemed to be their final offensive possession, Meredith Bedell stepped in front of the opposing player to intercept a pass and immediately called a timeout to give her team the ball with under three seconds remaining to set the stage for the game-winner.
