Building a New School Community

Headmaster Andrew Chase ’73 says that with the start of each school year, we are tasked with building a new community on the Eaglebrook campus. The players each school year, namely the students, are different, but the essence of the community is the same, one of respect and caring, and one that is committed to growth. The Eaglebrook community believes in the Core Skills every boy should learn, and is also committed to a set of Values that we should all live by.

We opened Eaglebrook’s 95th school year with 248 students, 100 new and 148 returning, from 14 countries and 22 states. There are 59 siblings of current or former Eaglebrook students attending, and 20 students are sons or grandsons of Eaglebrook alums. The new international students came to campus first, on September 6, for an orientation. See photos from that event here. The remaining new students arrived on September 7, unpacked, and then hiked to the Rock. See photos from their arrival here and that adventure here. Returning students arrived on September 8 and classes began on Friday, September 9.

Saturday, September 10 brought a cookout for new students. They grouped by dorm at different campsites on campus and enjoyed food, games, and getting to know their Sixth Form big brothers. See photos from that afternoon here.

The first Sunday Meeting of the 2016-2017 school year was held on Sunday, September 11. Assistant Headmaster Paul Cyr-Mutty spoke about being mindful and read the poem “Ithaka” by C.P. Cavafy. Watch that clip here. Headmaster Andy Chase ’73 gave a brief history of the school and then spoke about the school year. Watch that portion of his speech here, and the full speech here. See photos from Sunday Meeting here.

Starting a new school year at Eaglebrook is not difficult but it does take dedication, attention, and care on the part of everyone involved. We are looking forward to a positive year. Watch a video of the opening days of school here.
