The 94th Winter Carnival

Eaglebrook’s 94th Winter Carnival was held on Saturday, February 6. Miraculously, it snowed the day before, covering the previously green grass with enough of a coating of the white stuff that it allowed for all events, save the ski jumping, to be held unhindered by bad conditions. On that Friday before the carnival, parents attended classes with their children. See photos of the class day and the snowy campus here. That afternoon, the Eaglebrook Music Department put on a concert in Bartlett Assembly Area, featuring the band, string orchestra, the jazz band, the chorus, the Ad Libs, and various piano soloists. See photos from the concert here, and check back later in the week for video. Shakespeare’s famous comedy Twelfth Night, the Winter Carnival play, was put on Friday night, also in the assembly area. And then, it was time for the carnival. The morning began with the first cardboard sled race, traditionally between Headmaster Andy Chase ’73 in his Eddie the Eagle sled and the student who won the cardboard sled contest. This year William C. ’16 won the contest for his rocket ship sled. The race began cleanly, but Headmaster Chase had a bit of a bobble at the end, resulting in one of his first losses in years. Watch the race here. After that race, the heats of cardboard sled races began, followed by the three-legged race, the Klondike sled race, and jack jumping. After the dorm events, any student could re-race for participation points. The residents of Mayer House took the Winter Carnival Cup this year as a result of outstanding participation in all events.
